Definition and Cause
Bad breath, medically called halitosis. Bad breath mainly caused by poor oral hygiene, gum disease, dry mouth or tooth decay. Less common causes include diabetes, sinus or throat infections, lung infections, kidney/liver failure, and gastrointestinal issues. Bacteria built up in your mouth causes inflammation and gives off noxious odors, which results in bad breath. It is also closely related to your health problem as one of the reason causing halitosis.
The most beneficial advise is to give us a call to schedule an appointment with us so we can advise the main cause of your problem after a thorough examination.
What Should I Expect When I Come In?
We will start a comprehensive exam that includes understanding past and present medical conditions, oral cancer screening, go through your daily diet and x-ray/s may be involved to check the condition of your teeth, gum, and bone where it is unable to be examined with our naked eyes.
What Options Do I Have?
The treatment will depend on what is causing the problem
- If we detect a sign of decays from the X-rays, usually you will have 3 options a filling, root canal treatment or extraction depending on the severity.
- If you have gum disease, we may perform partial gum treatment, full mouth gum treatment or refer to a periodontist (Gum Specialist) depends on your severity. Then, you will be advised for the next step that needs to be done to improve the condition of your gum and prevent the same issue from happening again in the future.
How Long Does It Take Normally?
It will normally take approximately 30-45 minutes depending on your treatment.
